This one day RYA course for the Short Range Certificate (SRC) covers VHF and DSC radio procedures allowing the leisure boater the same benefits in safety as professional skippers. The syllabus meets the requirements set out by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The course features on practical use of a VHF radio with built in Class D controller, again, providing practical use of DSC (Digital Selective Calling). Our radios have been modified for use in training (transmit function disabled) and candidates will be shown how to make routine calls with marinas, ports, harbours, HM Coast Guard and other vessels as well as making distress and urgency calls, which can save lives.

Course topics include:

  • the basics of radio operation
  • the correct frequencies (channels) to be used
  • distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
  • making ship to shore telephone calls
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
  • Search and Rescue (SART)
